The lawn service I own, I bill $65 an hour for cutting. My company is just me. For cleaning leaves up, I’m at $100/hr, one client gets a $700 clean up bill as his lawn has massive oak trees. If it takes me half an hour to cut a lawn, it’ll be in $35 range. $35 is the lowest I charge for anything. I do all my neighbors homes for $20-25 as I don’t have to drive to them.
I got a quote to mow grass, for fire prevention purpose (as opposed to beautifying the hosue). I haven't asked estimated hours yet; this hourly rate already pauses me. Is that a normal price range for mowing grass these days? This is around Albion CA.
$45/hr = $90K annual salary... It seems just yesterday that hourly workers were fighting for living wage.
Sounds normal to me! Do it yourself if you don't want to pay
If this contractor has workers comp insurance, he likely pays a bare minimum of $10,000 a year. I had an electrical business in NC from 2008-2013. I paid 1,300 a year for a "ghost policy" that gave no coverage on myself. My former boss had paid about $5,000 a year for coverage on 2-3 employees that didn't cover himself. I think for him would have cost $10,000. I'm sure insurance is much higher in your state. My general liability was a $1,000,000 policy that cost about $1,250 a year. I charged $75 an hour for service work and about 40 an hour for bid projects. I charged less than my former 2 bosses because the economy was so bad. On paper, I paid myself $15 an hour. In reality, I never drew a regular paycheck. My wife carried us with her salary and I occasionally wrote us a draw for a few hundred dollars if we were short for the mortgage or other expenses. Everything I took in went back into keeping the business alive. I closed the business owing $30,000 that it took over 5 years to pay back. Our family is still suffering financially for it.
What is the price of equipment, gasoline and oil in CA? The simplest push mower is now getting close to $200 here. It was about $100 for years. About $125 for the most basic string trimmer. About $1,200 for a simple riding mower from Home Depot. Not sure about blowers, edgers or hedge trimmers. Gasoline here runs just over $2 a gallon at the moment and has been over 3.50 at times. I have to use nonethanol gas for my stuff and it is $3 a gallon. Without it, my stuff breaks down. I think nonethanol fuel at Home Depot is now about $6 a quart, some brands in liters.
Check out the cost of trucks and trailers. They are not cheap either. Check out cost of state and/or local business licenses.
My truck, trailer, mowers, weed whips, air blowers, plow, rent, insurance, fuel, clothing, blades, air compressor, dumpster etc, etc, etc are far from free to me.

I think it would be dependent on how thick and tall the grass is. Is this grass like a lawn or is it closer to brush? Clearing brush can get expensive.

Grass is about 2' tall. By the way, this is not grass that cows or sheep regularly eat, is it?
OP the assumptions underlying your math are spurious.
its cheap boomer math. my dad does the same thing. he ends up either not having some job done or complaining about what a rip off it is. he actually found someone to cut his lawn for i think $30 a mow but then was never happy with the job. i forgot, thats the other thing he does. sometimes he actually manages to find a dirt cheap provider and then is shocked that they do a crappy job.
$48 for 1/3 acre. Takes about an hour for one person. Don't care how long it takes, paid by the job. That $48 includes travel time. Also people who cut grass aren't booked solid unless they work for a landscape company.
