i was given a tree/shrub today, there are no identifiying marks on the pot. can you help me figure out what it is? it's about oh...4ft tall. not a clue if it needs full sun? partial sun? indoor plant? outdoor? any help you can provide will be very helpful.

I believe that may be some type of magnolia, perhaps a Jane magnolia tree in one of the "Little Girl" series. What it seems most reminiscent of though is a magnolia called the Banana Shrub - Magnolia figo - (no, it's not a banana plant) but I'm not positive that that is what it is.
You will need to wait until those two fuzzy flower buds at the top have opened up and bloomed before you can properly have it identified by flower colour and form. Anyway, for starters here is information about Banana Shrub magnolias and their required growing conditions and I'd suggest for now that even though not fully ID'ed yet you should treat it and feed it as a magnolia. I think you should transplant it into all new fresh soil in a slightly bigger plant pot for the time being until you have decided whether or not to select a spot in your garden to plant it in the ground, or else to keep it in a container.
since we are approaching full summer temps here shortly, i won't plant it anytime soon. once the cooler temps return & it's still alive, i'll plant it. once the buds have opened, i'll have a better idea of what i've got.
It's a magnolia. The veins in dogwood leaves aren't like that, also the unopened developing flower buds of dogwoods aren't fuzzy like magnolia buds, dogwood buds are round and smooth like little round balls on the end of a bare flower stem.

If you have an Android phone, get the app called, "Picture This". Just take a photo of a plant, and it will identify it. It's surprisingly accurate.
