Their suggestion for this area was to put plants in containers that I could periodically move away from the woods when they needed more sunlight. Great idea, but not too realistic. The pots were too heavy for an older lady like me to move.
You could put them in wagon or wagons....but then again that is an expense also. If I lived near you I promise I would help!

Normie - what about a bird bath or a water fountain? After seeing your knock-out roses, well...how could ya?!

Vinca would work. It is a ground cover that has pretty blue flowers. It is real hardy, grows well in shady areas and does not require a lot of water. Minimum care.

I just planted 20 "vinca minor" or myrtle or perriwinkle plants at my place. They seem to do very well in all kinds of conditions, especially shade. I dont know if deer consider them an appetizer. I guess I will find out because we have about 7 deer who cross the property daily. But to get to the vinca they would go past the hosta, which I know is a fav. of theirs. What the heck......we all have to eat!

WELCOME TO ::Shake-Away :: (http://www.shake-away.com/products.html - broken link)

I haven't seen any deer here in SoCal, but I can vouch that Shake-away sprinkled around the perimeter of the block wall stopped all the unwanted climbing critters - raccoons, possum, skunks, etc. so I'm betting it would work to keep the deer out of the garden area.

I find wood violets to grow like weeds. I have them in my garden as ground cover and they grow like wild fire and split easily. I have them in every condition possible around my home... shade, sun, clay like soil, sandy soil... they grow anywhere without problem... It is nice in spring when they bloom and you have a large carpet of purple flowers... I would give them a try...

We too have deer that pass through. They have never bothered my vinca. They love to eat apples off our trees. We have six trees, so plenty to share. One year we planted okra in our garden, they love that stuff.

Vincas are considered Toxic plants, that's why smart animals avoid the plant.
