Marianinark, I googled "walking iris" and found a number of sites with photos or discussions of it. In these discussions it is called neomarica gracilis. One very informative site is Dave's Garden under "walking iris."

For those who are interested in purchasing the plant: Look at Onalee's Home-Grown Seeds and Plants, which was my favorite vendor. I've had no experience with this nursery but I liked what she said about her plants and business.

Got my irises in the ground yesterday, and am ever so proud of myself -- and happy for them. Mulched them well, gave them some water, and am happy it is rainy and cooler here today. I am going to love them, I know. Now that I have some, I will be able to get more from them, and move them around to different areas of the yard.

I wish I still had a wood-burning fireplace as iris love the ashes -- NOT coal, but wood ashes.

for some reason, our irises did not really bloom this year. we only had one with a flower! I don't know if it was because it had been so cold and wet this spring or if something ate a lot of them. some had some real nice foliage, but no blooms.
