I'm firing 2 of my plants. I gave them the best fertilizer, more than enough water all summer, and no growth.
Now it could be these plants don't like their neighbors, or the neighborhood, perhaps that explains it, or I haven't talked to them enough or they're not getting enough sun. Who knows!!!
Ripped out one of my Tiger Eye Sumac. Beautiful small tree, but despite the literature, highly invasive. Will keep on in a pot and one in the back and prune the roots with terror. Ripping out most of the abelia. Nice plants but a magnet for leaves blowing and getting caught in them.

What plants, exactly?
Perhaps you did something wrong and it's not the plants fault?
(wrong fertilizer, wrong amount of water, wrong placement?)
Maybe those plants just grow slow the first year? Or maybe they are inappropriate for the hardiness zone?
More info needed...

I try to solve the problem, some plants looked almost dead but still made it woth some effort. Most recently I planted a 6' tall Camelia into the ground that seemed unhappy in it's giant pot, and sure enough, it was root bound. That took digging a hole 3' in diameter, 2' deep.

I haven't fired any recently, but I've learned to stop hiring non-natives that do TOO well in my area. I love butterfly bushes (buddleia), but I don't dare grow them. I've seen how they will take over stream bank areas. Those seeds really travel.
I'm very familiar with those that play dead for part of the year and come back to life in another season.
My 2 Germander plants play dead all summer long, not even a leaf, then? It gets cold and they're a riot of purple flowers. Not being familiar with these lovely plants, the first year I almost dug them up and composted them. Glad I didn't!
I pulled up four Indian Hawthornes last week and threw them in the burn pile (so I literally fired them). No idea why I ever planted them in the first place because they're not that attractive. I call them McShrubs because they're often planted around the drive through speakers at fast food joints.
Yeah, I just got rid of some clumps of giant Shasta Daisies that I planted from seed and they turned into 7 feet tall monsters and became invasive. I know I didn't get all of them out either so I'm still going to have some more major digging and weeding to do. Learned my lesson that bigger isn't always better and I won't plant those things again.
