The bulge at the bottom of the pic is a rat that this guy had just swallowed before I shooed him off my porch. I'm happy to have all the snakes that seem to enjoy my little piece of Earth.
Corn snakes are popular pets because of their nice nature. You should see the corn snake color variants (called morphs) produced by hobbyists. Link below shows some of them. The corn snake has a huge natural range and coloration varies across it. Many of the variations originated from different locales.

It's illegal to kill snakes in our state too, unless threatened by one that is poisonous. There are federally protected snakes that can result in a $25,000 fine if you kill them.

It's illegal to kill snakes anywhere here in Canada too. We only have 25 species and they're all protected. Out of the 25 species, we only have one type of venomous snakes (3 types of rattlers) and they are extremely rare and isolated. The maximum penalty for killing a snake up here could be a fine of up to $50,000 or one year in prison.

In PA people can only take one Timber Rattlesnake or Eastern Copperhead a year and that is only in season and with a permit: https://www.fishandboat.com/Learning...sReptiles.aspx. You are allowed to kill one if you or your family are in danger, but it must be reported and you cannot keep it. Also the ones that are taken with a permit cannot be shot.
Basically all snakes are protected and as pointed out, the fines for ignoring the laws are great!

Yeah, none of that is true in North Carolina. And if it were, the judges would laugh it out of the courtroom.

Always read your laws before you do anything: https://www.ncwildlife.org/News/wild...ke-in-the-wild. "Killing a snake is not only unnecessary but also could be illegal. Four of the six venomous snakes found in North Carolina are protected. The pigmy and timber rattlesnakes are listed as species of special concern while the Eastern diamondback rattlesnake and Eastern coral snake are listed as endangered. None of these four species of snakes should be handled or disturbed without a permit issued by the Commission."
Maybe they will laugh you out of court or maybe a new judge will fine you based on your laws? It would probably be better to practice the 3-S treatment!
RINGNECK Snakes are common here in Florida. They are harmless, they eat grubs, small bugs like roaches and are a good thing to have around the garden because I tend to shy away from pesticides
If touched, they will play dead, I am told they can emit a musky smell, but I have only once ever had to move one just to get it out of harms way.
A full grown ringneck snake is under a foot long. Anything that will eat grubs which attack my plants is welcome.
