I planted what I thought was yellow squash, now I am thinking it is zucchini, but I picked one and it is huge, not like the zucchini I see in the store. Could it be I did not pick it soon enough, and if that is the case is it still good? Or could it be something different? It is a very dark green and long like zucchini, but very big around and much longer than the normal zucchini.

That is exactly the problem. I think I just read somewhere (maybe here) a zucchini will develop in about 3 to 5 days. We do fine this time of the year (so far only one squash has gotten oversized) but come another few weeks when we start getting many, we will have trouble spotting them in time to control the size.

As for it being good, sure, the only problem it might be a little mealy and not have quite as much flavor. Those are the ones that are fun to stuff just like bell peppers or use in zucchini bread..By the way, they keep in the fridge for a long time.

My butternut squash just opened it's first flower - wow these blossoms are HUGE (specially compared to the cukes which are now happily climbing up the wires I attached to the fence = )
