I've got about 4 or 5 of these plants in my backyard. I'm new to this house and was thrilled to see this flower pop over the weekend. I have two plants that don't look as healthy as the other two do - I don't know if it's location - the other two are getting more sun, too less/too much water,if there is a disease or if the soil is lacking a certain nutrient. I would love to find out what type of plant this is so I can look it up and see what the specifics are. I'm in Dallas TX.
Thanks Dragonslayer! When I google for information, it's hard to find anything about plant care ... it's mostly about the herbal antidepressant, St Johns Wort, LOL
I just purchased two of these to plant in my garden. I can see what the tag says for care, if you still need the info, and post it for you. They don't usually tell you much on those plant tags.
That would be great, thanks. I've got two plants - actually they are the size of a small shrub, that has leaves turning orangish/red, and then dropping off. Also, if you look at my picture, behind the flower, is a leaf that is yellowish w/some brownish spots on it. Wondering if I should treat that, and how.
Here's what it says on the plant tag (from Bonnie Plants > Home)
They like full sun and will grown to a height of 12"-36". If new plantings, they should be spaced about 15-18" apart. (I always put things too close!)
St. John's Wort thrives in any well drained garden soil, and should be cut back early in spring as it may become invasive if left to its own devices.
I'd love for my two plants to become invasive. I want to harvest the flowers and make my own skin lotion. A friend gave me some she had made (she's an herbalist) and it was *wonderful*! Unfortunately, she's not doing it any more because the field behind her home, where this herb grew wild, has been sold to a developer and is no more.
