Does your yard tend to be wet or dry? I'd look around and see what grows in the woods in your area, that can be a really good indicator.
If you have sandy soil I think Turkey oak would make a fine small shade tree, and they turn bright red in the fall. For wetter areas something like Hornbeam or Sweetbay magnolia are good choices.
Loquat could work too, I know they grow fine around here.
