Title says it all. Been getting trees for 10+ years, and stupidly never knew this was a thing. We got our tree yesterday afternoon, the guys there fresh cut it, and got distracted when we got home. Only just now out it in the base, watered, without making another cut. Do I need to take it out of the base again, make a fresh cut, and put it back in? Or can I see if it takes water over the next 24 hours? Thanks all!

Yes, cut off 3 inches or so.

Thanks very much. I assume no harm if I do it in the morning? Or are hours crucial at this point?

I'd do it now. The bottom has already started to dry out and the sooner you get it done the less damage (I guess is the word) is done.

Done…pain in the butt, but new base seems to be much more moist. Thanks again!

Good. I hope you hadn't already decorated it.

Nope…put it in the stand and read about the fresh cut rule 5 mins later.

when my husband was courting me, he removed a foot off of a fully decorated tree, holding the tree with one hand and sawing with the other.

I was impressed
