Last week of January and here in Virginia it’s 30’ today, but expected near 50’ by the end of this week. It appears the cold snap of the past several weeks is finally lifting as Spring is less than 50 days until Spring.

So enjoy the next several weeks, but now is definitely time to start thinking about Spring lawn care. Don’t make the mistake of what most people jump to of going out and buying a bag of high nitrogen fertilizer…think crabgrass prevention.

With every Spring, crabgrass prevention is one of the most important, if not most important, tasks of the year.

For skipping this simple task, your lawn will be overtaken come June, July, and August with that weed that thrives on heat and dry conditions.

My Top Pick for crabgrass prevention each year is Lesco Crabgrass Preventer 0-0-7. Another one that can easily be found for crabgrass prevention is Spectracide Weed Stop Granular.

In February, in coastal ga, we will put down pre emergent on the lawn. Either Scott’s Weed EX or the other Scott’s with a Halts. Too early for anything else yet. No fertilizer until after the first cutting. We have centipede grass and it is dormant in the winter.

I am about a month out, but totally time it with the soil temperature.

Always like to be slightly earlier than later.

I hear you. Last Thursday it was 12 degrees. Today it's 70 degrees.

Typical Texas weather.

Yes, was 63’ at my place yesterday and going to be a high of 34’ tomorrow, Continue study cold temperatures have broken.

Continue to monitor those soil temperatures as the 50” mark is not too far off.

Things are getting very interesting when it comes to soil temperature with mid 60s later this week and several days next week in the 60s.
