You could also put down a layer of plain, clean cardboard. That should suppress the weeds and it will quickly break down after you cover it with woodchips or dirt. I cover my pathways with woodchips over a layer of cardboard and it works out pretty well. It should work in a raised bed, too.

I was just finishing the bed when it started to sleet. Tonight is supposed to be the last freeze, but I am wondering. I have my cardboard, straw and dirt ready to put in the bed in a few days.

The bed is built and I am waiting for the temperatures to not drop into the low 30's. It may be another week at least.

We were planning on planting today, but the wind is blowing to hard. It is 59 degrees, but it is cold with the wind blowing. Hopefully tomorrow!

I built a few covers for my planters. It really warms the soil up during the day and doesn't cool off too much at night.

Here is a picture. She has tomatoes, romaine lettuce, jalapenos, banana peppers and marigolds. She was told that marigolds would keep the bugs away.

Good job

Yes, I read that marigolds is a good companion planting along with tomatoes.

What are you doing about irrigation? Do you plan to go out every-other-day to hand-water?

For right now we will water a few times a day with a water hose. Once they are established we will set up a soaker hose to water it.
