I just finished weeding a flower bed that sits on the west side of our house. I want to plant something there that fills in the space, is fairly easy to maintain, but mostly to keep the "weed garden" from coming back.
Along the rear of the bed is the house with two low windows. The bed is about 6 feet deep (front to back). The width of the area I've just cleaned is about 3 feet wide at the rear, and 6 feet wide at the front (L-shaped). This is an area that is definitely not a focal point, but it's visible to our nextdoor neighbors and from the street.
I'm in Zone 7a. The soil is pretty heavy with some clay, although the bed has probably been amended somewhat over the years when the prior homeowners were here (about 12).
Any suggestions? I have several beds yet to get through, but this one is ready!
I suggest one of the spreading jumpers, like Blue Rug. They aren’t fast growing, but they form a very nice green mat that nothing grows through. With that, you can do something like Stella d’Oro day lilies. They are repeat bloomers, but they die back to the ground in the winter. This makes it easy to rake out the beds and you can even use Round Up before the leaves sprout in the spring.
Both of these plants do well, without pampering, in the blistering GA heat, so they’d be even better in zone 7.

BTW, just after I posted here, I learned that most of the weeds I dug out this morning were nutsedge. I did a pretty thorough job of digging them up from under the roots, but I know there's no way to get 100% of them. Ugh!

If they spread from the root, you need to round up them.
