I appreciate your concern RCowgirl. I certainly did not intend to misinform anyone. It definitely is safest to boil the water when making the sugar water solution.
However, I have spoken with hummingbird experts (real experts not just neighbors/friends) who told me that as long as the feeders are cleaned and filled with a fresh sugar water solution every day, it isn't necessary to boil it. I clean our feeders every time I refill. Early and late in the season when I know it will be out for a few days I boil the solution first. But when I refill them every day I do not. I always make it fresh, never store it.
Here is info from the Audubon Society: Feeding Hummingbirds
From the site: If feeders are cleaned and filled with freshly-made, hot water, sugar solution every day, then it may not be necessary to bring the solution to a boil. If you plan to store solution for two or more days, boiling is a must.
I agree with R_Cowgirl; this is the way I always make my hummie juice and I feed them all-year-round.
There are a couple hummies who hang out all winter in s/Oregon, even through the freezing months. I don't know how they survive the frost..... but they do..... and I have to replace the hummie juice in the mornings when it freezes solid!!
NOW that it's spring, there are very many hummies and I have to give them a refill every other day; I enjoy watching a few share the feeder (not very often)
I saw this thread and realized I hadn't put my feeder out yet. I washed, cleaned, and made so nectar but no luck on the feeder yet (it's near my kitchen window) but did see 2 on the bottle bush tree which just started flowering last week.
I am sure there here. I need to spend some time out in the yard.
I notice that the hummies in my area are most active during the morning and in the evening around sunset. They are so competitive in the evening.... they fight over who gets to sip the juice OR maybe they are just playing
What flowers do hummingbirds like? I have a feeder which I haven't put out yet due to cold but plan to soon. I'd also like to plant some flowers that they like.

FUSCIA plants ! Hummies love them and they are very beautiful in a hanging planter (I hope I spelled it right) but try to google the topic; I'm sure there are many other plants they like
We have a lot of hummingbirds in our little backyard. We have a huge rhododendron bush that they seem to love, as well as some evergreen trees and a few maples. We have a few different hummingbird feeders hanging in the maples. We fill them with a homemade sugar and water solution that the hummingbirds seem to really love. I don't know what sort of hummingbirds we have... some are green, there's one violet colored one, several copper colored ones, and two red ones. They are so fun to watch. Our cats spend hours at the back windows... we constantly hear the sound of them zooming from tree to bush to feeder... it's really cool.
