...for all the people who enjoy xeric flora. I figured Id start a thread for cacti talk and care sheet info. Also bring your cacti questions here, some experts will be along to help with any questions you might have.

Ive been keeping cacti for a few years now (about 3) and really enjoy having them around the house. Ive lost a few due to lack of care info on the web (people at the greenhouse werent educated either lol). Please feel free to share pics and any info you have regarding certain genus/species. Im sure Nitram will be along to help with his vast knowledge of cacti.

ok I have to ask
how do you repot them with out lots of "ouchies"
thats the one thing that has kept me from trying cactus's

here is a picture of "mama jade" and one of her young

i started her from a 2 1/2" cutting 16 years ago

This was taken almost 2 years ago so they are bigger now

Thanks Karla! Nice specimens yourself!

When re-potting, we grab the root bulb and gently insert it into the new pot, careful not to touch any of the glochids or spines. If coming into contact with them is inevitable, heavy work gloves are used.

Use kitchen tongs or bar-b-cue tongs. With tongs you probably won't need to use gloves, since the tongs are an extenstion of your arm and hands. Stickers won't attach to tongs.
Tongs are used by professionals to aid in the re-potting and are very e-z to use.

Ive used rubber-tipped forceps on one occasion, worked well! However the rubber tips did have a few tiny dislodged spines in them when I was done.

thanks for all of the suggestions
I may have to give cactus's a try
Even though my husband "claims" the "bazillion" plants I have are enough

I can make the succulent shelfs in the screenroom succulent and cactus shelfs
that way they would be out of the dogs reach

I only have 9 cacti, and the wife tells me I "have too many", too, so dont feel bad.

I keep my cacti outside here in IL at night, on the patio. Some nights it gets chilly enough to form condensation on the grass, will it affect my cacti?
