Hi,

We just moved to our new home. The garden in the new home is absolutely gorgeous. That is the exact reason that we bought the house for. We already have the sprinker system in place which waters front, back and side areas. I wanted to step forward and go the gardening my self. How can I get started? There are many small trees and plants in our back garden but I don't even know the names of the plants.

My husband can take care of lawn mowing but he is also not familiar with anything related to the garden.

Any helps or ideas about websites stuff?

the Gardenweb forums helped me when I was just starting out. There is a Texas section as well as a Gulf Coast section where you can post your questions. I used to take pictures of the plants in my garden and post them on the site for identification. Came in very handy when my thumb was less green than it is now .

I have also found the Horiculturists at Teas and Buchanan's to be helpful with plant and disease identification...plants are their passion!

Also don't forget about local gardens like Bayou Bend and Mercer Arboretum that are really fun to visit.

If you like books, then check out the River Oaks Garden Club's houston gardening book (the name escapes me, but Amazon sells it). I have referenced this book many times over the years. It's very well done.

Finally, River Oaks Garden Club has a concise set of links you might want to check out. I don't know how current the list is, but I did notice quite a few good resources: River Oaks Garden Club - Links

One of my favorite sites for gardening is DavesGarden. They have a great forum for Plant Identification. I just post a message with a description and a photo, and it gets ID'd. It has helped me a lot.

They, just like Garden Web has local forums.

I prefer the format of Daves, but not all of it's forums are "free" [there is a $20 fee to access ALL of the forums, though the ID forum is free.]

I was a member of Dave's for years, but a few members were into drama and ruined it for everyone else, so many members left the site (including myself). Now I mostly go to GardenWeb.
