I was just wondering if anyone had started planning next years vegetable garden yet. I've already gotten quite a few of my seeds so that in a few months I can start on the whole process again. This morning I finally got the garlic planted, so I guess you can say that I've officially started on the 2009 planting season. We grow most of our own vegetables and fruits. And every year we learn a little bit more. It's a lot of work, but so rewarding to be able to sit down to a meal that you know where it came from.
I plan for the market garden and make sure I have varieties we like. And will plan for increased seedling sales for 2009. The first catalog will be in the mail this month.
Our garden this year was disappointing for us, so I'm hoping for a better garden next year. Early in July this year we had a nasty localized hail storm which really ended the season for a lot of our crops. Fortunately - we'd already picked enough blueberries that we were starting to tire of them and we froze enough for the winter.
I'm going to try black beans next year for the first time ever. We always try at least one plant that we've never grown before. If it works out well we just add it to the list of plants to grow. This year it was strawberries and raspberries. This year we just watched them grow, but next year we hope to enjoy the fruit.
Although it was a very short season for the tomatoes because of the hail, I enjoyed what I had while I had it because I tried an heirloom variety of tomato that was very tasty.
Does anyone have any hints and/or suggestions about the black beans?
I am so excited about a vegetable garden next year. I have never had a garden before so I can't wait. I'm sure I will make a ton of mistakes but I hope I learn alot. Where does everyine get their seeds from? What do I need to do to prep for next year? Any good "beginner" gardening books that you recommend?
I didn't start many veggies from seeds, mainly transplants (just because its easier IMO). The transplants I got from Walmart worked out excellent.
Seeds are available from many stores (ie any Nursuries, Walmart, HD, Lowe's, some grocery stores even have them)
Just start scoping out the garden sections and read as many opinions as you can on the internet to make your decisions...thats what I did and worked out well.

Good luck with your garden next year Lisa. There are oodles of gardening books out there to help you prepare for your garden. It is a lot of work, but very rewarding.
