I know it'll eventually rot, but by then perhaps I'll have picked up enough cinder blocks people dump on the roadsides to build my boxes with them!
Thank you for the tip. I will try to do it myself and see how it goes.

Good Luck. Here's a picture of one of mine from last year. The 'fencing' around the outside is to keep my neighbors 20+ feral cats from using it as a litter box. Gotta love suburbia!

Thank you, I am sure it's keeping a lot more than just cats. I have rabbits so I think having a fence will keep them away.

I made the fence using 1x2 lumber, getting Lowes to cut it for me at 4' and then some pieces to 2'. Then I screwed them together as a frame, stapled chicken wire to it and zip tied them together so I can take them down at the end of the season and put them away in the garage.

For starters, you can try cool-weather veggies that grow fast, such as lettuce. It may be too late for that now, but keep them in mind going into fall.

Tomatoes, herbs, peppers, peas have all been easy for me. Now and then there's a problem with tomatoes (if overwatered, for example, or watered at night, which they don't like); squash bugs can give you a hard time if you don't catch them in time. Cukes grow well for me, as does rhubarb. Sugar Baby watermelons reseeded themselves one year and I let them be; we had a nice little crop of deliciously juicy fruit.

Don't be afraid to give a lot of things a try. You'll find what works best for you. I wish you fun and success -- and be sure to report back on how it's going for you!

Thank you South. I met with the people who will help me set my patio up today, I have limited abilities to build and prepare, so they are going to help. Very nice young couple starting a little business on the side, so I am excited to see what we will get done together. I was at Bi-Lo and they had some nice looking tomato and squash plants that I couldn't resist. I bought 2 each, I already put the tomatoes in containers, now waiting for my box so I can plant the squash. I also bought some seeds to try. I am really looking forward to work on my garden, thanks everyone for the great tips.

Here are some pics of my garden. I have one tomato that is almost ripe. I can hardly wait to eat it. I will have to share though. The large strawberry plants are last years. The three lone pepper plants are two chiles and a habanero. We want the chiles to cross pollinate with the habanero to get a nice hot chile.

Default Your garden

Phawk57 very nicely done garden, I especially like how you did the tomatoes. I was going to do it with cattle panels straight up two rows of panels 30 inches apart but then I changed my mind and I am going to an arch with the 16ft cattle panel and create a tunnel of tomatoes. Good luck on harvest.

looks awesome. I am glad to see you are using straw as well. I have read so many good things about using it and it is much less expensive than some other mulches. I just hope it works for me.
