The leaves on wild onion or garlic don't usually flop over. Crush the leaves and take a sniff -- wild onion will let you know exactly what it is!

The leaves on grape hyacinth are flat and sometimes a bit fleshy, and this time of year they look like a nest of snakes, or a bad hair day.

If they are grape hyacinths, in the early spring you'll see tightly set purple cones emerge from the center of the plant. Those are the flower spikes. The flowers smell like grapes.

I've got tons of them growing in my lawn. In late April it's a beautiful sight. Then the spouse gets out the lawnmower and rips their pretty little heads off. *sigh*

Ohiogirl81- you are right - they are grape hyacinth! Thanks so much. I learned they should bloom Feb/March so I'll be watching for the blooms.

I learned something, too! I'll have to wait until the snow goes away to see what I really have in my yard!

Thanks, Ohiogirl!

It's odd that they sprouted last august and have grown to a foot in length by February. I'm eager to see what blooms!
I didn't know they were that long & grew after Aug...
crocus only come up in the Spring.

OHIOGIRL...

I believe you are correct. I have some of the grape hyacinth, but they are so very, very tiny.
How tall do yours get ???

Glad WE all helped each other out.

The flower spikes are about 4 to 6 inches tall. If I don't cut the grass, the ones growing in the lawn will get even taller.

The foliage will die off in late spring/early summer, and then re-emerge in late summer/early fall.

Mine bloom in late April/early May. Can't wait!
