When you talk about wildflower seed, do you mean see if they'll take to the ground as is? Or you're saying that I'd have to get soil first?
Thanks for the link too. All your information is much appreciated!
I was at Walmart and they had a huge box, 2-3 lbs or so, of wild flower seed for I think around $12. I've used wildflower mixes and they usually just grow...well like wild! You could add soil, or just lightly rake it in as is. It depends how bad the soil is in your muddy area. Because they're wildflowers, they're generally very hardy and can grow in pretty tough conditions.
Do you suggest small rocks (not pebbles; I mean slightly smaller than an Oreo cookie) or large rocks (like boulders)? Or does it not really matter?
I was thinking more in terms of larger rocks, say about 8" diameter. Gravel alone washes away too easily. Wildflowers would be pretty but a stronger perennial ground cover would pull the whole thing together better, I think. Sounds like a fun project and maybe when it's all done you can post a pic? Cheers!

snkalaska -- wow! My husband and I do really like the look of wild flowers; that whole unkempt and colorful look. Also, the fact that we're not big on upkeep... well...
STT Resident -- I wonder if we could do all of it: rocks AND wild flowers AND some hardy greenery that would be the base covering. What do you think? Hey, if you think it sounds like a fun project, why don't you come back to CT for a visit and "play" in our back yard!!?!?!? LOL!

No reason why you can't do both. I'll pass on the play date, though!

Maybe order a regional mix from someone online. One other consideration, most wildflower mixes are meant to grow in full sun to mostly sunny areas.

STT Resident -- HA! OK, OK, I'll post pictures instead, once it's all done.
Gerania -- this weekend, we're going to a local garden store with all of these ideas. We'll also explain the mud/shade situation. Hopefully they'll have what we need. Fingers crossed! Thanks for the link -- I'll check that out.
