We live in NC and put in some sod someone gave us in the summer.
Don't really know what we have .
We watered this summer and it looked great til frost and it looks
dead now. We are hoping we have some warm weather grass
that will come alive this spring.
I would take a picture but just imagine BROWN.
It sounds like you have a warm weather grass. Give it thru the spring, it should come back. If it still looks bad once the weather starts to warm up, you'll know you lost it.
PS My wife and I are hoping to retire to NC in a couple years, so I'm learning as much as I can about the climate and everything else there!
Yes, I believe you have warm season grass. I have it too - but that is a choice I prefer as it takes our heat much better in the Summertime. Ususally starts turning green in April or May depending on weather.

NC is the best. I have lived my whole life in NC.
Beaches and mountains are a quick drive away. We may retire in the NC mountains in a few years . Raleigh has gotten too big for this country gal...
All warm climate grasses turn brown in the winter in the South. Usually a good hard frost will bring em' down. I have centipede in my yard and it is still brown as of today. Oh but I do have some green weeds!
You can overseed a yard in the winter with winter rye or Fescue or something like that but I don't crave a green yard (nor do I want to mow one) year round. Actually the ones I've seen around here (northern La) don't get tall enough to mow until late March or early April
Husband checked back to where it came from and thinks it may be
Emperor Zoyia(spelling????)
