Birds don't like anything that can tangle their feet. It all depends on your structure, sometimes hanging nets so they won't settle, or if nets don't work you can use old-fashioned chicken wire set a few inches above your roof, just anchor them between a few bricks, the wire won't catch the wind. I've used things as simple as badminton nets stretched between the space between my house and the house next door.
If they are only really staying on the peak of your roof, you can look into spikes. If they are roosting on peaks and valleys then you will have to get more aggressive and go to some kind of electro track system. When we inspect to deter pigeons, we look at multiple options. Owls, snakes, etc last only for awhile. Trapping is good as an immediate removal but other pigeons take old pigeons spots in time. Spikes can be good an bad, if you have pigeons roosting in valleys then they will use the spikes to nest against.
You could always trap them and donate them to the Philadelphia Gun Club: http://www.sharkonline.org/?P=0000001060
If Bob Barker can donate a million dollars to fight the gun club; you could donate a million pigeons!
I think my father used a product like Tanglefoot 300000654 bird repellent in the 10 ounce caulking tube. But they were roosting and nesting on large old windowsills.
