We recently returned from a trip to GA and really liked the look of the pine straw widely used there. We are thinking of having pine straw shipped to our home in DE.

I have a few questions. Which type is best, 9" needle or 14" needle? We want it in place of hardwood mulch for dressing and to help with weed control and moisture retention. I've read that our shrubs will like the acid but wonder if we will we have any problems with bulbs and perennials and do they just push through the 3" layer.

I use pine straw, have you checked Home Depot or Lowe's? They have it in stock around us, its usually the 9" kind, I'm guessing it comes from Loblolly Pines, anyway, I put down a 3" layer every year and my perennials and bulbs have no problem pushing through it. Pine needles do really help with controlling weeds, but they do not hold in moisture as well as you might think. Regular mulch does a better job IMO. When you are laying it down make sure you are generous in the application because it will get matted down and be more compacted. Also, make sure you have border around where you are laying it because the needles tend to get everywhere if you don't have some means of keeping it inside an area.

Thx Mdawg. I ordered the 14" needles online. Did the larger ones for the color (red) more than anything. Just hope it won't be difficult to spread out evenly, Guess I better got some think, long heavy gloves for the project.

Well send it up here! It is kind of a rip off, since I could go find a pine stand in the woods and just take some from there...

We use it heavily here too, but we also have LOTS of pines here. The longer 14" needles are most likely from Longleaf, and the 9" ones are probably from Slash pines. They won't keep that reddish color long if you put them in the hot sun, but we have such a steady supply of it down here that it's easy to keep it fresh.
