Planting advice (iris, grow, autumn, north)

am new to northeast----garden in back of house has 2 large open areas--need some advice on what to plant now that would blossom or grow before winter---have not gardened in this area before

Depending on the size of these areas, you could add in any# of Autumn flowering Crocus and/or Colchicums Which are often called crocus..but are in the Lilly family ( crocus are in the iris family)..Any amount of these add alot of late season color just before,and sometimes just as the first snows fall..

Chrysanthumums (sp). I never spell that one right. If the area is large enough and you want some shrubs included, check with a local garden center. They can set you up with a lot of different selections. You may want to avoid the big box stores, they'll sell you something this time of year just to get it off their lot.
