Hi there....
I wanted to try bird feeding so I put in a small tube feeder with the cheapest mixed seeds in my 2nd floor apartment balcony and from the very next day sparrows started feeding from it in droves. Then the bird activities increased and I even saw grackels feeding, cardinals sitting on my balcony (but not feeding yet), wood peckers in nearby tree. But they started to make a mess in my balcony. So I decided to hang it in the tree (6ft from ground) right in front of the balcony and bought a bigger birdscape safari triple tube feeder. I put black oil sunflower seed in one, mixed seed in one and a mix of black oil sunflower and seed mix in the other. I still see birds around my balcony and the tree...but not a single one of them feeds from the feeder. If I throw some on the ground or my balcony, they feed on those. I was wondering what could be the reason. Is it the new big feeder that they don't like or they can't find it hanging in the tree (even if they sit in that tree all the time)? I would really appreciate any feedback.

Thanks.

larger birds like to get their food off of the ground. you probably need a platform feeder that are open at the top so birds can just fly onto the feeder rather than try to catch the ledge. some are square wooden platforms (see link). some are round hard plastic platters.

no cats....no hawks. But the issue is even the sparrows which used feed in the single tube feeder from my balcony doesn't feed from the triple tube feeder hung in the tree. They started feeding from the ground also.

Sometimes you just have to give them a little time to get accustom to the new seed, feeder and placement. They'll come back.

They will certainly come back this winter when food is scarce. Just keep the seed fresh, don't fill it all the way, and watch for when it runs empty.

But its not like birds are not around. I see plenty of birds flying around even sitting on the tree just not in the bird feeder.

tet tea, does that mean they may not even sit on the bird feeder for weeks ?

My feeders aren't being used right now either. There's lots of food around for them. When that food disappears this winter, they'll be back. Just keep the food fresh, emptying it out every couple of weeks, and they'll find it when they need it.

They will come to your feeder when they are hungry, sometimes it takes a while.

Also, this time of year there's a lot of natural food, like flower seeds, around. I have sunflower seeds in a feeder and the birds are going after the sunflower seeds on the flowers right now.
