Couldn't find a dedicated "flowers" forum so thought I'd ask here!

I received a lovely bouquet of flowers this week -- roses, and large, white and pink lilies. The lilies are big -- now that they're all opened they're nearly six inches across. So whatever those are....

Anyway...the roses, alas, have no fragrance to speak of, but the lilies have quite a pungent scent! Is that normal? Even the cats are wary of them ...so at least that means they aren't being shredded for fun.

The scent is nearly giving me a headache. So either I have a "bad" batch, or must make a note never to have these in my home again??

Thanks for helping the horticulturally challenged!

Some of them do have a very strong scent. I had some big ones in my Valentine's bouquet this year, I think they were Stargazers. When they first opened, the scent was very strong and not terribly pleasant, but they seemed to mellow and turn very sweet by the next day. I actually really enjoyed them and they were lovely. There are different types of lilies, I think some of them have no scent at all. They are extremely poisonous to cats, so it's a good thing that your's are leaving the lilies alone.

It depends. Asiatics tend to have little fragrance. Orientals, like stargazers, are heavily scented. Not everyone likes the smell. I love the stargazers. I grow lots of them.

I think I'm allergic to Tiger lillies. I sneeze when they sell them at stores and don't like their scent. But they grow wild in wet areas along roads and are nice to look at.
Here's a question. What's the usual growing period for an Easter Lilly? My mother grows them and has had them for years. They bloom in the spring and early summer. About 10 years back, we had a very warm Indian summer and this Easter lilly bloomed the week of Halloween. She cut it and took it in Halloween day. This was in southeast Pennsylvania.

I so agree with you!

I hate the way the large Lilys in the floral bouquets smell.

I can't keep them in the house. They give me a headache.
