We recently purchased a home where the previous owners left a very enjoyable birdbath/fountain. What they did not leave are the instructions on what to do with it before winter sets in. I know we have some time to go here in the Mid-South but we don't want to wait too long. It is a 2 tier, about 3.5-4 feet tall and the lower bowl is about 2 feet in diameter. The pump is 110 volt electric. Any help, advice or suggetions would be greatly appreciated.

Antifreeze in a birdbath? Wouldn't the residue next year be toxic to the birds?

No, go to Walmart and look in the camping section. They sell bottles of pink antifreeze labeled as non-toxic for RV use. When we drain our water from the RV in fall, we put this stuff in the plumbing system instead. In the spring, it is drained, and replaced with water. You should be able to do the same with your fountain. Come spring, just run some water through to rinse out the pump and water lines, then fill with water.

I'd drain it and leave them empty for the winter. Especially birdbaths. If you're worried about cracking, etc. Just remember, even in winter, birds will look for places to get a drink. If you put even non-toxic antifreeze in the bath, they'll be taking sips from time to time.

The solar powered heaters are pretty good. When it gets colder your bird feeder becomes a pretty popular place for birds. I would just drain it/cover it or put a heater of some sort in it. Don't let the birds drink non toxic anti freeze all winter. Seems mean.
