You may want to try a different variety that grows better in your area. Sounds like a climber would be best. One that grows really well here in NoVA and would probably thrive even better in your zone is Abraham Darby. While not actually a climber, it does get pretty tall (about 8') particularly if you trellis it. It's a very prolific bloomer that requires little maintenance.
