My in-laws just gave me a beautiful bougainvillea, but they didn't get it in before the frosts of fall. It spent at least two or three nights outside in below freezing temperatures (it dipped into the 20's a couple times).

The leaves are pretty much dead, curled and dried up.

I was wondering if this plant even has a chance or it I would be better off just accepting that it's dead. If there is a chance, what can I do to help it out?

Thanks

Not sure if this will help, but I had a similar situation with another type of tropical plant. I watered it and then made sure it was kept in direct sun in the house. That does require moving it around. I'm still waiting to see if it continues to live. I didn't try that on my bougainvillia last year, but I hope for both of us that this helps.

Several bouts with temps in the 20's probably killed it pretty dead.

Cheer up, you can always get a new one next year.

I live in an area where we have bougainvillea everywhere - year round. (I'm in the Palm Springs, CA area). Is your bougie in a pot so that you can bring it indoors? If so, I would keep in inside until your weather warms up. If it's planted, you may be able to dig it up and re-pot it and bring it inside and nurture it until you have warmer weather.

I've had plants freeze back to the roots before--ones I forgot to bring indoors in time. Sometimes they came back in the spring and sometimes they didn't. I would bring it in, take off the dead leaves, water once a week, keep in sunny window, trim back any stems that are obviously dead and hope for the best come spring. Then, if it doesn't sprout back from the roots after it warms up, toss it. Good luck.

Boug is everywhere around here 'cause it rarely freezes in Phoenix. The freeze usually kills it right off.
