In a few yrs I plan to put the home on the market and move south.

We are looking to find a place where, with a greenhouse [though i've never had one before] we could possibly garden year round... more of the Veggie gardening.

Is that possible, for one?

I think I need to be zone6b or higher. and good soil.

With the fact that i want a basement, that eliminates Florida and a few other states.

any input would be great.

TCS

Upstate SC to Charleston. Good, sandy soil that needs only a little compost to be very productive. Winters are mild and barely fall into the single digits. A little snow, sometimes an ice storm. More towards the coast, it's warmer.

HI
You want a basement, year a around gardening..Look into the Willamette Valley (the I-5 corridor)
we can garden about 9 months out of the year out here ..Its just a neat area to play in the dirt at..
Lots of homes have basements plus the climate is pretty easy to take too..Not the gloomy that everyone says it is..
Go to some of the master gardener web sites and see what they say..Call them they are full of information..
Good luck and happy gardening

Parts of Oregon and WA state are zone 8. They have wet winters and springs, so gardening is different than a zone 8 in SC. I've seen some beautiful gardens out there too.

I think the biggest hurdle is going to be comparing cost of living. All states have pros and cons where this is concerned.

I've been browsing NE Arkansas, though there the personal property tax looks like a killer.

Here in the valley Salem area where I live we are zone 7, cool wet winters and nice easy to live with spring summer and fall..90 is front page news in the summer..Its just real easy to live with..Cold frame gardening is something some of the gardeners do here in the winter..
I think the cost of living out here is higher than parts of the south east.....
For us coming up 6 years ago from northern cal it works well...
DM me if I can help you anymore..
