You guys are working to hard. Buy the firs starters from Walmart or Home depot / Lowe's. Break off a small piece, light it and there you go. We use them all them time camping.
I would never recommend soaking paper in kerosene and use it as a fire starter because it can be very dangerous.....
Wax infused log fire starters do an excellent job as a fire starter but small plain 6-8" slivers of the size of a thumb wood work just as good. I use to purchase 2 cords of oak each season and have it aged for a season prior to using. Wood needs seasoning to withdraw water from the wood but it will only readch the himidity level as its surroundings.
It is a good idea to have a fire ring indoors and stock it with wood prior to setting it in a fireplace. Seems dirty and it is but for dense wood it is what is needed to start a fire quickly.

Here is my solution for fire starter.
A long time ago, I bought a case of Duraflame fire logs.
Take one, and cut in small pieces, about 1 inch think.
Cut each slice into 4 pieces, and you have a fire-starter that works rather well.
I can not remember how long ago I bought that case .....
BTW, We heat our house with wood.
I also make fire-logs from newspaper.
Take a dowel about 2 inches diameter.
Now wrap newspaper around that dowel that has been soaked in soapy water.
Keep doing that until the *log* is about 5 inches diameter.
Take the dowel out and let dry standing up.
These *logs* burn a long time.
Too bad, they are only OK to create if you have nothing else to do .....
I stuff empty toilet paper rolls with dryer lint and pour melted paraffin/candle wax in them. I put a couple of these under my wood and light them. I haven't needed to use the gas log starter since I started making these.
