I have a small garden in the back of my house with a few trees and plants. Every years a family of fat hornets seems to come out during spring time and buzz around one of the trees which blooms with flowers. It just so happens that I have a clothesline for laundry right next to the tree coming from my window to a pole. Whenever I hang my clothing they seem to fly up to my window and buzz about giving me a hard time. Can anyone explain this behaviour? They have not bitten me yet, but they seem to annoy me when hanging clothing.

According to a line in this article -http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/17/wo...8621.html?_r=1 - bees tend to be attracted to brightly colored clothing as they resemble flowers. Not sure if this applies to your case though.

Well I usually just wear a black t-shirt at home...nothing reflective. Perhaps they smell food or something?

Are you sure they are not carpenter bees?

Are you sure they are hornets and not just the big bumble bees/ carpenter bees? I noticed some buzzing around the garden and lawn and they would fly towards me whenever I went out. The neighbors dog was chasing them trying to catch them. They are harmless although I hope the dog doesn't get one in its mouth, ouch.
I know some hornets are the fat black and white kind and others look like big wasps. They are aggressive. No honeybees around, though. I saw some last year and hoped they were making a comeback, but the news said they suffered some big losses again over the winter.

I've not seen BIG Hornets, my inclination is Bumble Bees and, as with most types of bees, if you leave them alone they will leave you alone---try not to wear hawaiian shirts or bright colors.

Plant different flowers that are not attractive to hornets.

Plant flowers that attract honeybees and provide a hive for them. Honeybees are faster and smarter than hornets (and all kinds of wasps) and will get to the nectar before the hornets. Lacking a food source, the hornets will naturally move on to greener pastures.

Is there a nest fairly close to the clothesline? They might be warning you to keep your distance.

Some clothing soaps smell very nice.......and Downy, too......maybe they are attracted to what you are using in the wash..
