I am long familiar with Sweet Gums but have two very tall, thin ones about 20 feet from my house. I would esimate these trees to be 70 feet tall.
One Arborist recommends removal even though the trees are per his estimation, heatlhy - no similar concerns about the nearby water oak. Another does not.
It the wood that brittle? Is the top likely to come crashing out of a tree that is healthy [ per both folks' evaluation]
I hate removing any trees - these are on the SW side of my house and provide some welcome shade in the summer - but realize sometimes less is more and would rather do the pruning that have nature do it. {the reason for the visit was to evaluate, get estimate for removing dead/weak wood and unhealhty trees}. Also the backyward is about a 10% grade down away from house and entire back yard is wooded.
My experience is that those type of trees do tend to be brittle and drop limbs. Also they make an incredible mess with the flowers in the Spring (kinda greasy pollen for lack of a better description) and in the Fall with the seed balls. I, too, don't like to cut trees so it's your call.
