It used to be trendy when I was a kid to take the sliced top part of a pineapple fruit and start an inexpensive houseplant. We did it many times. Never got a fruit out of it though.
There are many tropical fruit plants that can be kept as houseplants. Pineapple isn't that unusual at all. Getting them to set fruit may be quite a task, but there are many of the plants that do good-to-great in containers:
vanilla (a vine, in the orchid family)
black pepper (a small tropical vine - the fruit: peppercorns - forms in long hanging bunches, like long tiny bunches of grapes, and can be used fresh)
ginger, turmeric, cardamom & bananas (clumping, rhizome-sprouted plants which are belong to the same order of plants)
feijoas and various guavas (from seed they start out VERY VERY slowly, but are very un-fussy plants once established)
most citrus (grafted kumquats, calamondin, meyer lemons, ponderosa lemons, key limes, keifer limes all can thrive in containers)
tamarillos, naranjilla, cocona, pepinos (some of the more unusual edible tomato relatives)
coffee
dragon fruit (a vining cactus, usually a large plant, but if you have space, give it a mini-trellis, and are good with cacti, you might get fruit; the flowers are unbelievable)
There's a coffeehouse near my house with a calamondin (kumquat X tangerine) tree and a coffee tree in the front windows, in pots, and both have fruit on them.
