I just found a fire ants mound on the base of my 3' date palm tree that I planted 2 months ago.

Does anybody know if they are going to hurt the palm tree? or would they help the tree?

Can anybody help me before the fire ants walk away with my palm tree?

I think they just like to get in there and hide. I find them in the lower needles of young longleaf pine trees that hang to the ground.

I suppose you could blast the mound away with a water hose, but be prepared to run away afterwards because they will scatter everywhere. I wouldn't leave the mound there because it could trap moisture and promote fungus growth.
