I am a non-gardener, the original black thumb. The Miles Kimball catalogue is advertising a"Garden Roll" which is a pre-seeded garden mat that you supposedly just roll out, water and sit back and watch the flowers grow.It sounds too good to be true. Any one have experience with this or similar products? Thanks very much in advance.

You'll still need to prepare the soil under the mat. And you'll need to water a couple times a day if it's sunny and warm. The seeds need constant moisture to germinate. Other than that, it's pretty easy.

Overpriced, but they work. Make your own. Take a roll of toilet paper, a pack of seeds and a turkey baster and water. Don't tear off the sheets, but start at one end and place a seed in each square, fold the paper over it, use the turkey baster to drop just a drop or two of water on the seed area, press to merge the paper and keep the seed from falling out, and continue down the roll. When you get it all done, you have an analog of what is being sold. Take it out, cover it lightly with dirt and it'll require exactly the same care as the garden roll.

We used a couple of rolls last year in our vegetable garden and werent impressed with the results, hand sewn seeds on both sides of the mats grew taller, faster and more abundantly.Give a mat/strip or two a try and see what you think.
