Hi, I am seeing "quality" soil mentioned several times in the posts for raised beds. What type of soil do you folks recommend? I am mostly interested in vegetables.
Thanks

High in organic material (compost), well drained. Heavy clay is a no go as is sandy composition.

Go to www.squarefootgardening.com and there is a recipe for a soilless mix. No weeds to contend with and when they do start it is very easy to pull them out.

Just how important is pH? If it is low, in the 4.0 to 5.0 range, what might have trouble growing?
My sister is expanding her garden and the soil could use some improving. I bought some peat moss as a mulch and also to add organic matter to the soil, composted cow manure, epsom salts, miracle grow shake and feed, Plant Tone fertilizer and also pelletized lime. I know that might take a few months to raise the PH.
Some plants seem to be doing well, like sugar peas and leafy greens in her older more established garden bed. New areas have tomatoes and squash and there the soil seems thinnest. More gravelly and silty. I thought maybe she might try pots this season for some tomatoes until the soil gets better established.

Very simple, I think it is similar to the square foot gardening recipe. 1/3 vermiculite, 1/3 peet moss and 1/3 quality compost.
