I fertilized my lawn a couple weeks ago with Scotts Turfbuilder with Weed Control. There were a couple spots where the fertilizer spilled in such a way that it did not spread out evenly. Now my grass has turned yellow in those spots - probably from too much fertilizer there. Is this just temporary discoloring, or is the grass now dead?

So too much fertilizer can kill grass, or was it the weed control part that probably killed the grass? The only thing it says on the bag is not to fertilize more than once within 30 days, and not more than twice per season.
Combination of both. Try to rake out any granules that may be left. Treat the deadspots with charcoal - you will have to scratch this into the soil. About 6 weeks after your original application you can try to reseed.
This happened to me last summer in a little spot, i just waited until this year, raked out the dead grass early spring and there seems to be some lively grass underneath the dead thatch. weird. I'll watch it, but I may have to seed there (or patch being it is so small)
Planted a new lawn last spring. Fertilized this spring with weed & feed. Ran out of weed and feed so I purchased and bag ofthe same brand. Started to spread in the untreated area. The first area grass turned gree and the second area turned yellow. Conditions used to spread were the same as the first area. What happened?
When my husband fertilized the lawn last fall, the same thing happened.....in a few different places. So 3 weeks ago, he went and bought 2 pieces of sod (matched our grass perfectly) cut it up, and inserted them in the bare areas. It has knit very well, and I can't tell where the bare spots were.
Also weeed control are bad to use after it gets over 80 degrees out. There are a few but not the genral ones that are safe. that is one reason I use liquid weed spray then fertizer later.I carazy what they charge for weed and feed types and it is as good at kiling weeds IMO.
It's most likely dead, but you can plant some of the good grass there and water it plenty. If there isn't much gap then it will even out.
