It may be doable. I have seen some pretty small paw paws in southern regions thought they are known for deep tap roots. I had tried some in my yard but they were decapitated by plumbers putting in a main sewer line even after I told them to avoid them. I too pine for paw paw.
Perhaps this would work in a pot but I am not sure how this would work with a freeze.
