We are trying to find out when My family came across from America. We think they came over from either Scotland or Ireland during the potato famine but we can only find names back to my great grandparents-Max and Zora Abernathy-this picture could possibly be Zora but the back is hard to read. I think it says "momma Abernathy, Der sweet hart" and I can't make out the rest.

the 2nd I think is signed James but it looks more like Garett, but Max had a brother named James. This one is Dated 1931, but I have a lot of these "post card" photos. Does anyone know the date range they were used?

Can any body decipher what's written on this?

On the 2nd one it is from Garrett. The date range on the 2nd one is around WW1 time. That gun he has looks an awful lot like a WW1 German Mauser. I could be wrong on that, but its close.

The pistol looks more like the old U.S. Military Colt .45 to me. And the man is wearing a U.S. Marine Corps cap. The picture post cards were popular in the 1920s/30s

You wrote "---from America." Did you mean "to" America?

Yes, I was talking about the 2nd image. I found out by the maker of the card stock "NOKO" the picture should be from 1907-1920's

Yes I did mean to America, my family hasn't been here very long and my great grand father seemed to appear from mid air, we are thinking the immigrants were his parents from either Scotland or Ireland

I'm sure you already have this but I need to know if I'm on the right track.

William Max Abernathy married Zora Elizabeth McGee 7 Feb 1903 and she was born 24 May 1886 and they both are buried at Kings Mountain NC.

Are those the ones you have?

Here is some time lines for the pistol. The Colt pistol was formally adopted by the Army on March 29, 1911, thus gaining its designation, M1911 (Model of 1911). It was adopted by the Navy and Marine Corps in 1913. Originally manufactured only by Colt, demand for the firearm in World War I saw the expansion of manufacture to the government-owned Springfield Armory.
