Every website has it's quirks and limitations. One of the major ones with HQ is that it's a literal search. And that the censuses are indexed (most of them) only for the head of household. You just have to learn to do more effective searches within the parameters of their search engine. A great thing about their census collection is that they digitized it differently than Ancestry did (one was b/w the other did color, I understand). And pages that are unreadable at one site are often just fine at the other. That's saved my bacon numerous times.
It's the only place you'll find PERSI. Now, I realize that it's only an index and to effectively use it, one actually will need to use a library, but it's a great resource for some of those little articles on families or individuals that don't warrant a whole book.
Their book collection is great. Lots of books are here that you can't find elsewhere. Keep in mind, their's was the first site that had digitized books. Others have come along since then, but theirs is still good.
The Revolutionary War pension records are great. As is the US Serial set. These are collections that are a bit higher-level research. Invaluable resources, but not ones that everyone's ancestors are going to be in.
Besides, you probably are accessing it like most of us, for free through your public library. And how can you complain about something you're not paying anything for?

Because when I do, you give me clues on how to use it, Enrico! Which is what I needed to find out.
I thought the census was the census... and now I'll have to look for those elusive 1910 census.....
