(I'm sure this is a stupid question, but bear with me because I'd really like to know):
These days in the U.S. you probably wouldn't find very many people who carry only one nationality- yet in whatever situations the topic comes up, you'll hear "I'm Irish" or "I'm German", etc.
However, when the question is race, it seems more common for people who carry more than one race to say "I'm part Native American or "I'm part Hispanic" , etc.
Can somebody enlighten me as to the reason for this?
I mean if it's popular to state a nationality as being 'yours' regardless of the percentage, why use the word 'part' when talking about races?
Saying that you are part Hispanc is meaningles in terms of race. If you don't know that then you skipped 5th grade Social Studies. Did you skip 5th grade Social Studies?

actually, when I was in 5th grade & thereabouts, my school focused on the "melting pot"-
so divvying people up wasn't as popular as it is now
And when I was in 5th grade social Studies was not a subject.
