Does anyone have an idea how I might find out if my gr-gr-grandfather (from NH) fought in the War of 1812? We have a small powder horn with initials that could be him dated 1815 - as well as a small wooden canteen? that we don't know much about other than that it's family (if that tiny barrel shaped thing with the plug is a canteen, it sure won't hold a lot of water!). So I wondered if he was in that war; he would have been 29.
I don't know how far back their records go, but ancestry.com does have military records.
also, you can ask these guys: Military Personnel Records
they might not have the records you want, as many military records were lost in a fire decades ago, but they might be able to direct you to where you could locate them.
thanks for the suggestions, folks! I checked Tia's Military Personnel Records website, but they don't go back further than the 20th century. They suggest a link to the Nat'l Archives so I'll see if I can do anything that way. Next time I'm at the library, I'll see how to get on to ancestry - as they all have free accounts (although you can't save off and you can't upload..) and I don't have one. It owuld be interesting to find out. I know where he lived at that time at least (oops, he was VT, not NH!)

oops- the National Archives was what I was aiming for... their contact info is on the page
Keep in mind that a lot of Americans served in that war in local militias fighting Indians rather than the British. You might want to see if there were any muster rolls for the local militias there in that part of VT. I have a few who fought in that war in Missouri and that's where I've found a lot of info on their service.
