Is a Daughter's Widower Who Remarries Still Considered a Son-In-Law? (family tree)

I'm stumped. I'm writing a short story involving a piece of property and don't know how to briefly describe the relationship between the former owner and the current owner.

The current owner had been married to the previous owner's daughter who died very young. They had one son. He purchased the property about the time he remarried, a couple of years later. My story takes place 24 years after that. At this point the previous owners are dead.

Is the current owner the son-in-law OR the former son-in-law of the previous owner?

I would say the former son in law, since the relationship with the daughter has been terminated by her death.

Looking at a Kinship report in Family Tree Maker s/w, he would still be a SIL. If divorced (rather than deceased), then he is ex-SIL.

Just about anyone would want to remain "kin" to a widowed son-in-law who was raising their grand kids.

My husband and I seperated instead of divorcing. He died recently and the family still considers me a daughter in law. I'm still considered family.

One reason I didn't divorce him was I didn't want to lose the family who were close.
