My H was a lifelong genealogy buff. He died recently and I gave away a lot of stuff to his relatives. I am still left with thousands of photos going back to the Civil War, or even further. I have to downsize and I just can't keep all of them.

Are there places that will take donations of old photos? Is there any way to store them so they don't take up so much space? How can I get rid of all this stuff and still preserve all the work H did to document his family history?

None of his living relatives are as interested as he was but there's always someone who would love to have all this. It would be a shame to lose it now.

Check with your state historic preservation and/or archives. Some states are more responsive than others. Also, if you can tie any of them to specific counties in your state they too may be interested. But again, some are more responsive than others. Here in AR we have a small rural county (Pike) that is very pro-active and has great archives while others couldn't care less. Thanks for caring and I hope you find a great home for all his collections.

Local museums or libraries might be interested.

See if ancestry.com might be interested....

Or you cuold try selling them on Ebay (take copies if the most significant, first). I've seen vintage photos sell for $20--$100 each, just check out the listings on Ebay. Those you keep, you could put in Internet storage, I believe there's some listings of good places to do so on this board.

Thanks for the ideas.

The county thing won't work because they are scattered all over the place. Different lines of the same family type of thing. I do have a lot from Montague County, Texas. I will see if they want those pics. My H's family owned a huge ranch there and they were well known in the area.

Also have tons of WWII and Korean War pics.

I did donate a lot of my Mom's old stuff to her nursing school. All her old text books, caps, capes, and even correspondence from the War Department. And most of the old pictures of her graduating class. They set up a display at the school. That was worthwhile!

I have so many it would take the rest of my life to sell them on e-bay.....

If you sell them on ebay, you could sell them in lots, not just individually.

State archives might be interested.

You can just make copies of them, you know. Offer the images to museums on loan, not giving them away, is a possibility.

Do you have any other papers or books that could be bundled with the photos? If so, an archive or library that keeps manuscripts might take them all.

Are they identified?

Not all, but many of them are labeled. I know about some of them and I would add what I know.
