I was looking for more information on an ancestor of mine who would be my 3rd GGfather on my mother's side. I located information from a Wisconsin Vital Records Index. The information matched up with what I had, so it was obviously his. The curious thing is that it listed his birthplace as "Ungern". I have no idea what that means, so I googled it and it seems to imply Hungary. Not being able to see the original copy, I have no idea if this was a misspelling, or perhaps an older translation?
Anyone know about this word or where I can find more information about Hungarian immigrants? I had heard that he may have come from Hungary (even though his last name is Klement, which would be German). Thanks.
Followup: After looking into it, Ungern or "Ungarn" is a German word referring to Hungary, which would make sense. Guess I answered my own question. If anyone has resources on looking up immigration from Hungary though, I would appreciate it.
Lots of German speaking areas have been in what is now Hungary and Czech Republic, too.
