Found out that one of my ancestors was married to a woman whose last name was "Linkish". What type of name is that? Doesn't seem to be common at all. Actually her full name is listed as "Salemaha Linkish", which makes it even more strange. Just curious on the origin of this name.

Question French ??

Take a look at the 1850 Federal Census at:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ce...50/pg0114a.txt

Salameh (Salma) gives her, and her first-born son, birthplace as "France"

Also, I assume you have seen this website:
Otto Klement, Lyman pioneer, an introduction

BTW, I'm no relation. Found these leads with Google

reed, yeah, that info on Otto Klement is actually where I found out about her. Didn't know she was listed on the 1850 census. Thanks!

My uneducated guess is that it is of English or Scottish origin. The "ish," as used in English surnames like Standish and others, seems to indicate so, anyway. A cursory search revealed that their are only eight people in the U.S. with that surname, so it is rare. According to some online information, people with the surname Linkish are more likely found in Pennsylvania and West Viginia.

Linkesch is a Hungarian surname. Maybe your person came to France via that route?

Also, just wanted to say that the first name is probably a version of the Biblican name Salome.

Just some guessin'.

Her second husband was German (last name Klement), but born near Budapest, Hungary, so that might make sense as well.

You really can't tell from a name alone what the origin is. There are many surnames found in many countries. You have to research the person, and find out where they're from.
