I input the enumeration district so that it could locate the records faster, but is taking a very long time to "prepare the image". Anyone else having this same issue?

YES YES YES!!!

I am going to try downloading a file and then seaching it. That might get a little cumbersome as I need to search many different areas to find relatives.

Or I might wait a month then when the servers are not so busy try again,

I'm not even getting anything available for my state (NJ). It only lists Delaware, Nevada, Rhode Island, and a bunch of US territories. No other states.
I search some of my relatives for whom I am certain of their 1940 whereabouts, and nothing comes up for the 1940 census.

I thought at 12 midnight April 2nd, the records would all just be there ready to be searched.

I got the feeling "available" was a very loose term, and that what we would be seeing was just the beginning of the beginning.

I just read on Ancestry that THEY only got the records at 12:01 AM today, and they all have to be indexed. Ugh!

I had thought they did the indexing already, and they just couldn't release them to the public until today. So all the hype with the daily countdown was just hype. It's not like we can really get anything today. Maybe some people can browse and find something (if you're interested in relatives in American Somoa) but we can't search by name.

They have been very clear that the indexing would not be done until after the release.

If you know the enumeration district, you can browse the records for that district.

If you know the 1930 district, the National Archives site will convert it to the 1940 district for you.

All I read was the countdown on the top right side of the Ancestry site, and believed it. It figures there'd be fine print....

Even knowing the enumeration district hasn't made any difference as I have not been able to access it at all from the NARA site. Site bandwidth has been a total letdown IMHO. I'm going to have to wait for ancestry to get their images loaded it seems.

I think this was predictable. There are too many of us curious genealogists out there, all trying to look at the same time!

Since Ancestry is hosting the images for NARA, I wonder if they are throttling the bandwith to try and get more subscribers. Purely speculation.

But I'm sure that NARA was unprepared for the onslaught of queries.
