My grandmother looks half Korean or Mongolian. She has VERY slanted eyes (eyes that drastically slant upwards), extremely high cheekbones, a very round /full face, extremely high arched eyebrows and lives in the Appalachian mountains. Yes, I would speculate she is native American but I am really tired of that possibility when it couldn't be enough to cause her extreme features. She is supposedly German, but I lived in Germany and no one ever looked like her!
It seems to be a strong gene and that very high cheekbone/slanted eye look runs in the family. We have no asian in the family, no spanish....What could this be? I mean , there is Native American in many Appalachian families, but it couldn't be enough to cause such drastic features. Everyone thinks she is Asian, everywhere she goes.
VERY interesting, thanks for that article! There actually may be a connection, she lives in a Mennonite community. She seriously looks like Geronimo or an Eskimo!...Yet I doubt she could have so much Native American that her features would look THAT Asian. Many other people in her family also look very indigenous .

Still the OP would like to know..so many mixes in races that can resurface at any time.. werent there many Asians working on railroads in the US way back and in the Appalachians.

No clue. But I am guessing the OP's grandmother is of Native American descent. You can never really know unless you take a DNA test.

She's probably just Native American unless you have some real reason to believe otherwise. Native Americans are Asian in ancestry, and specifically Mongolian, right? So what you're saying makes sense.
I got her DNA results yesterday! I had posted out of curiosity before the results came back. She is identified 70 percent with Finnish and 30 percent with Altaian. Altaian are Asian looking (I think) . It is crazy, because we always expected Native American, considering the family are from Appalachia for many generations. Now I am thinking , Appalachian regions are not as much Scottish/German mixed as people think, but ALOT of Russian/Eastern European/Asian. My grandmother did not have a ANY percentage of Scottish, Irish, German or English.
Her genetics also had traits in common with Serbian , Albanian and Polish...But mostly just Finnish and Altaian.
My family look very EuroAsian and Russian, so I find it very funny, especially considering I get asked if I am Russian everyday of my life and always thought I was a Russian looking Scottish or German person
After reading a little bit about the Altay mountains, they seem genetically related to Native Americans or atleast Eskimos! I've joked she was an Eskimo, never expecting her to actually be anything close.
The family members are quite surprised, considering they couldn't pick the Altay mountains or Finland out on a map.
Very interesting! How do you suppose that she got this heritage?
My sister looks Korean - or half Korean. If you are familiar with Bjork from the Icelandic rock band The Sugar Cubes, she looks a bit like her.
To my knowledge we are German English Irish French and a little Polish.
I now wonder about this.
When I was in Eastern Europe people came up to me and spoke Russian or Ukrainian and thought that I was a native. My sister does not look like me at all BTW. And yes we are full sibs.
