I had a distant aunt trace the family on my mother's side all the way back to Connecticut before the revolution. Turns out my family were Tories and had to flee to upstate New York. Well, there went my hopes of joining the Sons of the American Revolution.
Join the United Empire Loyalist Assn., that's what I did.
One grt-something grand has a plaque commemorating him on a street corner in Flatlands, Brooklyn. Others were early pioneers in New Netherlands and Lower Canada.
The only famous one was actually notorious, and he was my maternal grandmother's brother and he murdered two young men in public view, one of whom was sleeping with his wife and the other an unfortunate bystander. The crime and his trials were in the papers for two years.
I learned about his imprisonment as a very young child as two of my aunts wrote to him, and one even drove quite a distance to visit him in prison once or twice. His crime was acknowledged in the family, but the reasons for it were never discussed. It was only as an adult doing genealogy that I came across the dozens of stories in the papers about his exploit and trials...and learned the reason for his crime, and the fact that his wife's lurid love letters were retrieved from the corpse of her lover and read in court on the last day of her husband's trial.
I am currently investigating whether I am related to Michelle Obama. I found via researching one of my ancestor's birthplace - Henry County, VA that Michelle Obama also has ancestry in that area and her relatives are listed on the "cohabitation register of Henry County" from 1866. I have been going over it trying to connect some of my ancestors with people on the register and have found quite a few until I read that article about Michelle Obama so I am going to go back through the info I have to see if I have some sort of distant connection with her, which would be cool.
My grandmother always said we were related to William Penn. I have no idea because no one has done the geneology to connect the dotts. I have heard though that I am related to Noah and Adam and Eve. From what I have read they are all pretty well known.

I have Tories and Revolutionaries in my tree. Keep looking.
